families (Figure). The MLVA type was determined in 1 contact; it also was MLVA type J, suggesting that carriage in this contact was related to spread of the same clone. Of interest, none of these 3 household members had respiratory symptoms. Nilsson et al. (10) also reported a high frequency of M. pneumoniae DNA carriage in household contacts; however, in contrast to contacts in our study, all of the household contacts in the study by Nilsson et al. had ongoing or recent respiratory tract symptoms. In summary, we report an outbreak of M. pneumoniae infections confi rmed by MLVA, a discriminatory typing method. MLVA typing revealed the clonal spread of a single M. pneumoniae type J strain in children attending the same primary school and in their household contacts. The cases we identifi ed may represent only a small proportion of the actual cases, which were likely underestimated due to mild symptoms, poor knowledge of M. pneumoniae infections by general practitioners, and lack of PCR availability. We showed that MLVA typing of M. pneumoniae can be used to detect clonal spread and outbreaks. This approach might also be useful for studying the worldwide emergence of M. pneumoniae macrolide resistance and for fi nding resistant clones with the potential for spreading.

in A. albopictus–endemic areas of the country. The reported number of serologically proven cases probably underestimates the true extent of the diseases in Israeli travelers because underdiagnosis and underreporting are common. Both dengue and chikungunya virus infection result in viremia that may last up to 5 days, and viremic patients living in A. albopictus–endemic areas put the area populat...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Dengue versus Chikungunya Outbreaks in Costa Rica
For decades, dengue virus has been a cause of major public health concern in Costa Rica, due to its landscape and climatic conditions that favor the circumstances in which the vector, Aedes aegypti, thrives. The emergence and introduction throughout tropical and subtropical countries of the chikungunya virus, as of 2014, challenged Costa Rican health authorities to provide a correct diagnosis s...
متن کاملSpread of chikungunya from the Caribbean to mainland Central and South America: a greater risk of spillover in Europe?
After a decade of outbreaks in Africa, the Indian Ocean and Asia, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is stepping out of the shadow of dengue virus [1]. Although these two mosquito-borne viruses share clinical characteristics and their main vectors, Aedes albopictus (the tiger mosquito) and Ae. aegypti, CHIKV has long remained exotic to the western hemisphere [2]. The emergence of the Indian Ocean lineag...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Dengue and Chikungunya Virus Antibodies, French Polynesia, 2014–2015
We investigated dengue and chikungunya virus antibody seroprevalence in French Polynesia during 2014-2015. Dengue virus seroprevalence was ≈60% among schoolchildren and >83% among the general population; chikungunya virus seroprevalence was <3% before and 76% after Zika virus emergence (2013). Dengue virus herd immunity may affect Zika virus infection and pathogenesis.
متن کاملZika Virus, a New Threat for Europe?
BACKGROUND Since its emergence in 2007 in Micronesia and Polynesia, the arthropod-borne flavivirus Zika virus (ZIKV) has spread in the Americas and the Caribbean, following first detection in Brazil in May 2015. The risk of ZIKV emergence in Europe increases as imported cases are repeatedly reported. Together with chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and dengue virus (DENV), ZIKV is transmitted by Aedes m...
